Cape Town's scenic beaches, which are a draw card for tourists, are occasionally contaminated by bacteria from faeces, at levels which pose a risk to human health, GroundUp reports. The City claims this is due to pollution washing out the stormwater system when it rains, but local scientists suspect the millions of litres of sewage pumped into the sea every day from pipelines in Mouille Point, Camps Bay, and Hout Bay also contribute. Overflows at the Zandvliet wastewater treatment works, which flow into the Kuils River and from there into False Bay, are also a concern. Yet the City has not made the results of water quality tests easily available to the public for the last five years. Water is precious Recycle & reuse water. Water shortages hit the poor the hardest.

Water shortages hit the poor the hardest.   Statistical analyses show that more foreign investment into Indian states in a given year is associated with lower levels of potable water access in subsequent years, with the poorest areas hit the hardest. Investment in water-intensive manufacturing and highly polluting industries increases competition for a limited quantity of fresh water, while also affecting water quality. States with larger proportions of marginalized and poor populations see the greatest negative effects of foreign investment on water supplies. These findings highlight the importance of regulation to restrict water use and wastewater release. Such regulation is harder to enact in states with higher levels of poverty. State governments enact much of India’s water-related regulations, and ordinary citizens compete against multinational firms in lobbying state politicians. Thus, in Indian states with higher proportions of poor and marginalized groups, the publ...

A new national survey shows almost a third of Americans (28%) have experienced water contamination issues in the past two years

A new national survey shows almost a third of Americans (28%) have experienced water contamination issues in the past two years, a slight increase from a prior poll. The survey, conducted by leading water technology company and global advocate for  clean water,   Bluewater, reveals how the deteriorating state of America's aging infrastructure  affects Americans' drinking water   attitudes and habits. Federal government rollbacks on clean water protections threaten to compound these national water problems. The Bluewater survey also reveals more Americans are taking action to improve their water supply quality. Nearly 60 percent of respondents reported they are taking some kind of action to control what's in their drinking water--ranging from drinking store-bought bottled water to using a purification system or water delivery service.
